Autumn Running Gear for Men

by Brian Contributor » on Oct 19, 2015 1

For the first time in months, the AC is off and the heat is on. If you’re anywhere on the East coast, it’s pretty clear that fall is upon us and summer is a thing of the past. It’s time to put away the swimsuits (if you haven’t already) and dig through the closet to find that long-abandoned winter workout attire.

Fall is the perfect time to exercise outdoors; It’s not so miserably freezing that you’re forced into the sterile neighborhood gym, and it’s not so hot that even a walk around the block feels unbearable.

So, grab your running shoes and hit the trails while the sun is shining and the weather is cool. Here are some cool-weather men’s favorites from DC-area runners. Next time you’re shopping for yourself (or the man in your life) these are great options for fall.

Surge Warm Half Zip – Lululemon ($108)

For a lightweight, sweat wicking running layer, you can’t do much better than this half zip top from Lululemon’s men’s line. Sure, you might scoff at the price at first, but their attire lasts for years and they have an awesome return policy if the quality isn’t up to your standards. You can bring an item of clothing back to the stores years down the line and trade it in for a new model if there is clear damage to the piece. So layer up in this lightweight shirt and hit the trails!

The Standard Issue Ear Gear – The North Face ($20)

Even if it’s not brutally cold out, running in chilly weather can lead to aching ears. Cover up with comfortable ear warmers rather than a full-on hat, which can leave your hair and neck extra sweaty. Beanies are great for freezing temps, but when you don’t want to overheat, ear warmers are a decent alternative.

Cold Gear Armor Compression Leggings – UnderArmor ($49.99)

Keep your legs warm and flexible by layering UnderArmor’s cold gear compression tights under your usual running shorts. These compression pants will support your muscles throughout your workout and keep your bottom half toasty warm.

Autumn running is best done on a tree-lined trail, so you can fully enjoy the splendor of changing leaves! Of course, not everyone has access to such an enviable running course, but try new routes through a local park or college campus. Don’t hole up in the gym simply because the temperatures have dropped. Take advantage of the cooler weather to amp up your runs.

Just make sure you bundle up appropriately!
