Video of the Week: How Did FiveFinger Bikilas Get Their Name?

by Brian Patterson » on Oct 07, 2011 1

Abebe Bikila won the Gold medal in the the Olympic Marathon twice:  first in 1960 in Rome, then in 1964 in Tokyo.  The interesting thing about Mr. Bikila is that he ran the marathon in 1960 completely barefoot.  After the win, Adidas sponsored him, and he ran in 1964 wearing Adidas running shoes.

In 2010, Vibram announced their new line of FiveFingers, including the Bikila model, named in honor of the barefoot achievement of Abebe Bikila.

Simply amazing to think of people running a full marathon barefoot. I wonder if his form changed at all after he started wearing adidas.

I guess not enough to slow him down.
