Day 25: Third Run Aftermath

by Daniel Dessinger » on Sep 10, 2009 1

vibram-fivefingers-classic-shoesI ran for the third time in my VFF Classics today. Luckily, the high school track was open to the public after 5pm.

Result: Uninspiring. The heat from the track was seeping into my shoes. Maybe it was the unwashed Injinji socks, but SOMETHING created a lot of heat and friction between my skin and my shoe. It was very unpleasant.

Also noteworthy: For some strange reason, I couldn’t push off the balls of my feet with my calf muscles like I normally do when I run. Maybe it was the impact of my weight on my uncushioned feet. Maybe my calves were already unusually tired from always walking in these FiveFingers. I don’t know.

Whatever the case, I had to use my quads to pull my legs up high in order to run the track. It felt like I was running slow-mo for a bad Chariots of Fire music video. Picture knees high, stride short.

I wasn’t at all impressed with my foot strength. Not sure what the deal was. Felt like a regression rather than a progression. I’ll wash my new socks before trying to run again.

Hang in there! It will get better. I struggled with really sore calves for a few weeks. But now I can feel my feet and calves getting stronger and stronger.
