Five Fingers and the interview circuit

by Tyler Hurst » on Jan 06, 2011 5

I have a hard time dressing for non casual events. I do own a suit and a few pairs of nice dress pants and dress shirts, mostly from Banana Republic. I know how to properly use my utensils at dinner (never set just your knife down, don’t scoop with your fork) and generally do a good job conversing, but when it comes to shoes, I’m screwed.

Most shoes hurt my feet. Any pair that has cushion, support, a sole or is tight makes for an extremely uncomfortable night. The last time I wore dress shoes, I spent eight hours shuffling back and forth on the balls of my feet. The outside of my feet ached and I desperately wanted to take them off.

I felt like a lady back when they were all forced to wear corsets. Seriously. The constriction and the forcing of my body parts to behave abnormally sucked. While I surely put on a happy face, I know people probably sensed how uncomfortable I was. I switched back to my Five Fingers KSOs the second I got back to my room and breathed a deep sigh of relief.

But I have an interview next week, with a very large, somewhat traditional company. I’m going to wear a suit, but I very much want to wear my Five Fingers. Because I wear them every day anyway, it feels wrong to pretend that I’m a fan of normal shoes, and like I said before, normal shoes make my feet hurt. A lot.

I have friends who’ve worn Five Fingers to weddings and business meetings and I’ve worn them to more than a few stuffy business conferences. I’ve always had people remark on them, but it’s never been negative (to my face, anyway). I’m certainly not wearing Five Fingers just to be different, because at this point, anything else causes me pain.

So I’m going to interview in a suit, with black Five Fingers KSOs on my feet. No tie.

What do you think are my chances?

Yeah.. people always comment my Fivefingers too. Most people think they’re kinda ridiculous though. I’m gonna try the suit + Fivefingers! :-)

People said that Crocs were ridiculous too when we started wearing them 10 years ago. We need to wear our VFFs more often than just excercising to make them more popular and accepted.

        Crocs are ridiculous.

I wear Vibrams every day, but I didn’t wear them to the interview.
