I have recently changed to Vibrams and Chi running. 3 weeks ago I broke my small toe. I RICE’d my toe for two days, then started running short distances in Asics. No pain – or very little. Did 15 kms in Vibrams – felt fine. Did a 7 k trail run in Vibrams and now the pain is bad along the topside of my foot from little toe to ankle. What could have caused the damage?

I recently broke my foot playing football, and have suffered from similar pain after running recently. Honestly, I’m worried that I didn’t give my foot enough time to heal. Another thing that may have happened is your tendons being tightened after the break. I know that happened to mine. After my toe was broken, it wasn’t aligned properly, and the tendon tightened, pulling my toe farther into my foot. If that is the case, you need to slowly stretch out that tendon. Try that with ice and hopefully it will feel better! I hope this is somewhat helpful! Happy running!!

My guess would be “too much- too soon”. You must take your time to allow the muscles, tendons, ligaments adjust.

A similar thing happened to me. I thought I had broken my 4th metatarsal. Instead, my 4th and 5th metatarsals had fused together, and I had broken them apart where they belonged.

    Patience is the key.
