The Lululemon Workout Pants Scandal

by Kat » on Mar 21, 2013 4

It appears the fitness apparel retailer, Lululemon, is experiencing something of a quality control issue. For those of you who missed it in the news, the Vancouver-based company is facing serious backlash for their most recent line of yoga and running bottoms. The black luon pants, which sell for around $90 a pair, provide inadequate coverage and expose skin best left unseen.

The major gripe here is that for the cost of the pants, the quality is expected to be superb. Dissatisfied customers are returning their sheer exercise bottoms in droves.

As an avid fan of Lululemon’s wunder unders, and a general lover of the brand, this recent press has been disappointing. When you come to love and trust a company, a mistake like this can put consumer loyalty to the test.

Laura Klauberg, Senior Vice-President of Community and Brand and Lululemon commented:

“We value the authentic relationships we have built with our guests. Their passion is amazing and we will always put them first.

We’re doing everything we can to fix the problem and replace these key items as quickly as possible. We apologize to our guests that may have been affected by the temporary removal of black luon pants and crops.

We will continue to update you as we learn more. Guests who have questions about their products are welcome to come to our stores or contact our Guest Education Center.”

In my experience, nothing fits as well and looks as good as Lululemon crops when I’m headed out for a distance run. There is no chafing, rubbing, pulling, or itchiness. There are no tags, no odor, and plenty of forgiving stretch for added comfort. Lululemon garb lets the wearer get into the zone during their workout and forget the clothes on their back, but this recent transparent pants nonsense will likely lose the brand a lot of customers and lead to a dip in profits over the coming year.

When a brand you love has a misstep, how do you feel about it? Do you remain a loyal customer, or seek out a similar product elsewhere?

SUCH an interesting story in the news! They’re dealing with quite a test of consumer loyalty.

I was thinking of buying my first pair… but I think I’m going to hold off awhile. For that price, I’ll wait for sufficient thread count.

I have worn lululemon clothing for years and love all of their products, but I have definitely noticed a decline in the overall quality of the clothes in the last few years. They have grown very quickly and perhaps they just can’t keep up with the demand. Product is way too pricey to tolerate anything but top quality. The fitness clothing market has a lot of players. Maybe it is time to give some others a bit of my business!!

Your facts are kinda misleading. The company only had issues with the yoga pants. None of the running pants were called back seeing how they were and are made from a different material, not luon. As I consumer and athlete I switched to Lulu because of quality. I got tired of having to buy new work out clothes because other brands care about cost and not the consumer. I would rather pay $100 for something that will last 5 years than pay $50 for something I have to replace every year. That is $150 dollars I have saved. No company is perfect, but in response they have been exchanging the pants for any other pair the person might want.
